Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study was preparation of a thin zinc phosphate and calcium phosphate coating on the zirconia to be used as a dental implant materials. For that purpose zirconia plates were placed in an acidic zinc phosphatizing solution for hydrothermal treatment. The coating layer was made by hydrothermal treatment in an acidic zinc phosphate solution at 250°C for 30 min to 12 h. SEM images confirmed that the zinc phosphate coating layer was successfully prepared by hydrothermal treatment in an acidic zinc phosphate solution and fully covered the surface at 250°C for 6 hours or longer. Calcium acetate solution was used to form calcium phosphate coating layer on the zinc phosphate layer for 6 hours hydrothermal treatment. The coating layer morphology changed and calcium and phosphate were detected by EDS after calcium treatment. The adhesive strength between zirconia substrate and zinc phosphate coating layer prepared at 250°C for 6 was measured around 60.25±2.57 MPa. In vitro cell study indicated that cell morphology and cell proliferation results for zinc phosphate and calcium treated layer were much better than those for non-coated zirconia substrates. We therefore concluded that the zinc phosphate and calcium phosphate coating might be useful for biomedical applications. Based on the XRD pattern the crystalline coating structure indexed as zinc phosphate (hopeite). The characterizations and cell study results approved the satisfying conclusion for the presented coating method on the zirconia substrates.
