Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The National Museum of Health and Medicine, USA possesses a rich collection of Japanese-related artifacts, however an indepth survey of the relevant material culture holdings had never before been undertaken. In this research project investigated all artifacts related to Japan to make a catalog. This thorough and comprehensive catalog will promote further research in the field of history of medicine, science, technology and military medicine.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
先行研究によると、米国内で保存されている日本の医学史・科学史分野でまとまった未整理資料が残されているのはNMHMが最後であった。残念ながら今回の調査で日本関連所蔵品の一部が紛失・破棄されている事実が発覚したが、詳細な目録が完成したことで今後の散逸を防ぐことができる。日本の近代化や科学研究、軍事研究などに関する資料や情報に対する需要は、国際的な科学史・医学史・技術史コミュニティー内で根強いものがある。今回NMHMの所蔵品を研究成果として整備・発表することで、日本で収集された資料を用いた研究が、米国はもちろん国際的に活発化することを期待したい。
