Outline of Final Research Achievements |
I investigated the suffering of people with Hansen’s disease or tuberculosis in asylum situations under the former Japanese policy of compulsory segregation. I also examined various aspects of their efforts to overcome discrimination, persecution and alienation. I focused on communal practices involving protests against segregation and surveillance systems; the aim of such actions was to create better living conditions and opportunities for integrating with society. My study focuses on the power of creation and liberation by describing the history of communal practices of people with Hansen’s disease or tuberculosis in Japan and Southeast Asia.
