Outline of Final Research Achievements

This project involved developing, evaluating and comparing new microscopic approaches to the observation of magnetic field effects on radical pair (RP) reactions. Such approaches are important in unravelling the mechanism of animal magnetoreception at the cellular level. There were two main goals: 1) to enable the application of rapidly switched and oscillating magnetic fields to the sample along with the ability to apply the magnetic field in any direction relative to the spectroscopic observation axis and 2) to allow the simultaneous acquisition of Time-Resolved Optical Absorption (TROA) signals at multiple wavelengths. The research resulted in the development of two new microscopes. The first is based on Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy and allows the observation of individual RPs as well as achieving goal 1). The second is a TROA based instrument that achieves goals 1) and 2).
