Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Synthesis methodologies for reduced pyrazinacenes up to dihydrodecaazapentacene have now been established and the important compounds octaazatetracene and decaazapentacene have been synthesized and characterized. Further work on polymerization of these compounds is now underway. For convenience of synthesis, octaazatetracene derivatives were selected and the synthesis is being developed. High profile result from this year's work is the synthesis of decaazapentacene, which will be developed for other applications beyond proton conduction. Work underway includes the on-surface assembly and electrochemical applications. A manuscript describing some relevant properties of pyrazinacenes was published.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Synthesis methods for required pyrazinacene compounds have been established. The remaining synthetic methods that require attention are towards the polymer materials. It is a matter of finding correct conditions. Based on the current synthetic knowledge and work done on the protic behaviour of the current compounds two candidates have emerged as being appropriate. The polymerization of these materials will be developed and relevant properties of monomers and polymers will be investigated in the final year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The knowledge gained from the synthesis of the higher derivatives has made it possible to decide on the appropriate materials for the development and completion of the project. Further work is required to establish proper conditions for the final products. Characterization of dihydrodecazapentacene and its derivatives will be further undertaken with emphasis on its self-assembly and semiconductor properties. Write-up and publication of available results is also underway.
