Outline of Final Research Achievements |
We found that a unicellular red alga, Galdieria sulphuraria had the ability to perform oxygenic photosynthesis even at -270 mV of ORP value, which condition is obligatory anaerobic condition. At the obligatory anaerobic condition, anaerobic cyanobacterium, Plectoneama boryanum could not perform oxygenic photosynthesis. In previous study, many lateral gene transfer from anaerobic bacteria to G. sulphuraria has been reported (Schonknecht et al. Science 339, 1207-1210). We also found that some of such factors acquired by lateral gene transfer from anaerobic bacteria would involved in oxygenic photosynthesis under obligatory anaerobic condition.
