Outline of Final Research Achievements

We surveyed individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and their families with regard to their experiences and difficulties arising from living with this disorder through to adulthood. The results indicate that the affected families go through life in a fog of anxiety, unable to visualize the affected child’s future due to a lack of information regarding the disorder and how it may affect their child’s long term outcomes as an adult. We created a theoretical framework for a care guide that can provide comprehensive support from childhood to adulthood. In addition, we visited the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia 22q and You Center to investigate advanced support practices, and participated in international conferences on 22q11.2 deletion syndrome to share information and stay informed of current developments in best support practices. We also established a support service that offers information and advice through a support organization, the NPO for Family and Baby Wellness.
