Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The goal of this work was to identify antibiotics for the treatment of drug resistant bacterial infections, through the use of a novel screening methodology. Although the screening process did not run completely as planned, we were nevertheless able to identify 16 candidate inhibitors of bacterial metallo-beta-lactamases - clinically relevant drug-resistance enzymes for which there are no known potent inhibitors. Four of these appear to be highly potent (IC50 values in the low nanomolar range) and work against a diverse range of related bacterial enzymes. Further characterisation of these compounds is ongoing, with the aim of developing one or more of these compounds into therapeutics.
