Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During this period of my research, progress has been achieved on several fronts. First of all, my research on programming Asian cinemas has been published (or expected to be published) in several edited volumes (in English): Chinese Film Festivals: Sites of Translation (2017), Taiwan Cinema: International Reception and Social Change (2017) and Japanese Cinema Book (British Film Institute). Several articles have been translated into Chinese and published in journals. Secondly, I presented my research at international conferences such as the Association of Asian Studies 2017 at Toronto.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

This is the second year for my Kakenhi-funded research. As expected, research conducted in the first year (related to my previous studies on film festivals and Asian independent cinema) was pushed further, and therefore I was able to present my findings at international conferences, get feedbacks from peer researchers and publish them in anthologies or journals in English. Kakenhi was crucial in facilitating my research and especially my fieldwork at various film festivals in East Asia; also it was crucial in enabling me to travel to international conferences and interact with international scholars.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

For the last stage of my Kakenhi-funded research, I would firstly make full use of the funding to finalize the unfinished part of my fieldwork. The focus would be shifted to classifying and sorting out materials that I have so far accumulated. Part of the materials are to be translated (between Chinese-English-Japanese, depending on the outlets of publication). Secondly, I would actively attend international conferences within and outside of Japan to present my research-in-progress. Thirdly, I would publish my research in the format of an academic monograph in English. Currently I am trying to contact several university publishers. Hopefully at the end of this Kakenhi project, I could make the monograph publication successful.

Causes of Carryover

In the upcoming fiscal year, I would need funding to purchase related books and get access to materials; funding would also be spent on data collection and material processing (such as translation, and proofreading). Most importantly, as mentioned, at this stage, I would be participating several international conferences, where travel expenses would occur.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

Several international conferences have been planned in the upcoming fiscal year, most of which would take place in Asia (such as Beijing, South Korea and Thailand), and the average expense for each trip would be around 80,000-100,000JPY. Travel expenses would also occur for several domestic film events (such as workshops and film festivals), each averaging 20,000-30,000JPY. Finally, the remaining part of the expense would be spent on data process and collection, as well as on books and materials.
