Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1) The "British Romanticism in Asia" edited volume was submitted to Palgrave in March 2018: readers' reports have been positive and we expect to sign a contract soon, for final submission in August 2018 and publication later in 2018. 2) I organized an international symposium on "Pacific Gateways" at the University of Tokyo in November 2017, with two keynote speakers (Nikki Hessell from Victoria University, Wellington and Julia Kuehn from Hong Kong University) and around fifteen papers over two days. I have already begun an edited volume of conference proceedings (to be finished in Spring 2019). 3) I presented at conferences including the CSECS annual conference in Toronto, and the ACLA in LA, where I organized a panel on "Ecology and Emotion in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries" with Professor Chunjie Zhang (University of California). This latter project reflects my growing interest in bringing "history of emotions" and ecological perspectives to bear on my research. It is planned that the latter panel will be published as a journal special issue. 4) I submitted two book chapters for edited collections (a Rikkyo University volume on "Pacificisms", and an introduction for the "British Romanticism in Asia" volume). These should appear later in 2018.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Publications from the project are continuing as planned, and I have continued to develop links with scholars in the field through organizing symposia and presenting at conferences. The one-year extension of this grant (until the end of FY2018-19) will allow time to further refine my findings.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The grant was extended by one year, primarily in order to allow me to present research at the American Comparative Literature conference (ACLA) in Los Angeles. Over the next year, I will see the "British Romanticism in Asia" volume through to its expected publication later in 2018, and continue to work on other publications resulting from this research. I am also co-organizing (with Professor Kimiyo Ogawa) a conference on Frankenstein in Japan at Sophia University in October 2018: this will further consider the transmission of Romantic literature into Japan.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The extension was primarily to allow me to present work at the ACLA conference in Los Angeles, which was held from late March - early April 2018. In addition, over the next year, I will use kakenhi to purchase books in my field, essential office supplies, and to arrange talks on related areas from international speakers at Sophia University.
