Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year I have made good progress with my research project. I presented three conference presentations (1 international and 2 domestic), and I wrote a paper on English phonological change and submitted it to a major international linguistics journal (this paper is currently under review). The paper sets out in detail numerous phonological developments in English and connects linguistic data with archaeological and other data in maps. In addition, I collected a substantial amount of data and materials in electronic form. I had intended to do an advanced training seminar in GIS training applications last year, but this has been rescheduled to take place in June 2016 (this is one of the reasons I did not spend all of my budget in the first year). Last year I was invited to become an affiliate member of Edinburgh University’s Angus McIntosh Centre for Historical Dialectology, so in the next year I will become more involved with scholars at Edinburgh University.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I am very pleased with my progress. I completed one long paper, including 4 maps, and submitted it to a major linguistics journal. In addition, I gave three conference presentations, which were well received.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I will present a new paper on English pronouns and morphology at a linguistics meeting at Kyushu University on 28 May 2016. I will present a similar paper at the 1st Angus McIntosh Symposium at Edinburgh University on 9 June 2016. A variation of the same paper is also due to be presented also at the 19th International Conference on English Historical Linguistics at the University of Duisberg-Essen, Germany, 22-26 August 2016. While in Europe, I intend to make a research visit to a major library, such as Cambridge University Library or Munich's State Library, to collect further data. In 2016 I will also take a seminar on advanced GIS applications. At least one paper will be written up and submitted to an international linguistics journal within the next year.

Causes of Carryover |
In the second year I will attend more international conferences than in the first year. I will present both in Scotland and Germany in June and August respectively. In addition, a GIS training seminar that was planned for the first year has been rescheduled to take place in the second year.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
1. International conference: Scotland 9-10 June 2016; 2. International Conference: Germany 22-26 August 2016; 3. GIS seminar 7 June 2016; 4. Library research visit probably at Cambridge University August 2016 (1 week).
