Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This study focuses on Japanese and Chinese high school teachers’ cognitions (beliefs and practices) regarding global awareness in English class. During the first year, it had 5 action plans: (1) I have made pilot questionnaire in English and collected 25 questionnaires. The pilot study was conducted to establish 30 most reliable descriptors. The theoretical model includes values, attitudes, skills, knowledge and understanding that are required for global citizenship and intercultural competence. The model includes 20 distinct components that need to be acquired by learners. The results showed that some survey items are too difficult, and some English concepts are not familiar to Asian English teachers. (2) I have completed my preliminary analysis of assessment of intercultural competence, and presented research findings at some academic conferences (TESOL, JACET, IALIC, Cultnet). (3) I also interviewed some English teachers and experts in international conference in China and Japan. (4) I have reviewed the new literature of the research questions, and wrote a book proposal based on my doctoral dissertation. The book proposal was accepted by “Springer”, the contract was given and the book will be published in 2017. One paper was published as a book-chapter and the other paper was published to refereed journal. (5) I have translated “Autobiography of Intercultural Encounter (AIE)” into Chinese, the Chinese version will be used for English teachers as an assessment tool of intercultural competence.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Progressing rather smoothly, however, I was unable to visit to Japanese high schools because of the different time schedule of my university. In the next year I plan to visit to Japanese high schools to collect interview data.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The research plan of FY2016 will include 4 stages. Stage I (4-7): Collecting and analyzing educational policies and curriculum about global awareness in Asian, Europe, and America. Revising pilot study. Translate “Images of Others: An Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters through Visual Media (AIEVM)” into Chinese. Translate English questionnaire into Chinese and Japanese. Stage II (8-9): Attending conferences (JACET, PAAL, SIETAR Japan) and presenting the research results. Stage III (10-2): Conducting national-wide survey in Japan and China. Stage IV (2-4): Analyzing questionnaire using SPSS; publishing annual research report and distributing on the web; writing and publishing research to academic journals.

Causes of Carryover

The interviews to Japanese English teachers could not be conducted. The personal expenditure and remuneration for interviews were not used.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

Incurring amount will be used for personnel expenditure and remuneration, including questionnaire respondents and interviews.
