Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The research focuses on high school English teachers’ cognition regarding global awareness and intercultural citizenship in English education in Japan and China. During the second year, it had 5 action plans: (1) I have completed the analysis of survey data about assessment of intercultural competence and intercultural citizenship, and presented research results at some academic conferences (PAAL, JACET, and SIETAR Japan). (2) I also interviewed some English teachers and experts in international conference in Taiwan and Japan. (3) My book will be published to book series on “Intercultural Communication and Language Education” through Springer in 2017: “Developing global awareness for global citizenship education: English language teachers’ beliefs and practices in China.” (4) One part of my research was published as a book-chapter through Multilingual Matters in 2016: “From principles to practice in education for intercultural citizenship., and one paper was published at refereed journal. (5) I have translated “Images of Others: An Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters through Visual Media (AIEVM)” into Chinese, the Chinese version will be used for English teachers as an assessment tool for intercultural citizenship.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Progressing rather smoothly, I have published one book chapter and one journal paper, presented three presentations in international conference.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The research plan of FY2017 will include 4 stages. Stage I (4-7): Collecting and analyzing new literature review about global awareness in Asian, Europe and America; Designing interview questions and classroom evaluation sheet; Analyzing questionnaire results. Stage II (8-9): Attending conferences (JACET, Japan CLIL, Cultet) and interviewing Japanese high school English teachers. Visiting high school in China, collecting interview and observation data in September. Attending and organizing the international conference about intercultural dialogue and Cultnet in Saga and Fukuoka. Stage III (10-2): Analyzing data collected from China. Stage IV (2-4): Publishing annual research report and distributing on the web; writing and publishing research to academic journals.

Causes of Carryover

The visiting to high school in China could bot be conducted.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

I will visit to one high school in China in September in 2017, and collect the interview and observation data.
