Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In this year, I published one article titled “Job Stress in Japanese Academia: The Role of Relative Income, Time Allocation by Task and Children” in the Journal of Asian Economics. This paper used my survey data of academics in science and engineering related department. This paper showed that the relative income hypothesis is at work even in academia. When an individual’s income is below the predicted level, the individual’s stress level increases. In addition, I found that the time allocated to research could decrease stress while the time allocated to teaching could significantly increase stress level. Children are also associated with higher level of stress.
In addition, I wrote a paper titled “Gender Gaps in Japanese Academia: The Impact of Research Productivity, Outside Offers, and Home Life on Pay" and submitted to an international journal.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I have published one paper last year. In addition, I have written and submitted one paper to an academic journal this year. I am waiting for the response from the journal.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In this academic year, I will focus on two tasks. First task is to make sure that my new paper “Gender Gaps in Japanese Academia: The Impact of Research Productivity, Outside Offers, and Home Life on Pay” is published in an international journal.
Second, I will write a paper on gender promotion gaps in Japanese academia using MEXT School Teacher Survey. This dataset contains the entire faculty in the entire universities in Japan. The strength of this dataset is that it has been conducted every 3 years, and thus, I can examine if we are making progress in the gender equality in promotion. Since my survey was conducted only once, it could not be used to see the trend in gender gap overtime. Thus, my new research will contribute to this literature.
