| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1. Research assistants were hired to help organize new data on pollution emitted by Japanese manufacturing facilities. The raw data come from the Japan Pollution and Transfer Register system provided by the Japan Ministry of the Environment. The research assistants have helped to organize the data and to begin the process of matching the data to specific firms in a separate data set containing financial and performance data on the firms.
2. I have used the funds to support two ongoing research projects/papers (books, presentations, attending research conferences). These papers are separate projects from the data collection activities described above in point 1. One paper (titled “From Compliance to Competition: Organizational Capabilities and Market Opportunities in the Evolution of Pollution Reduction Technologies”) has been completed and is currently under review at international journal. A second paper (titled “Environmental regulation and MNE expansion: the moderating role of pollution reduction capabilities and firm multinationality on international location choice”) is currently in the process of being completed and will be submitted to an international journal later this year.

Plan time frame was appropriate and allowed for steady progress. Research assistants completed tasks on time and with appropriate level of quality.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Will combine collected data with data to be purchased in 2016 year. Analysis and writing of papers to follow.
Will present second paper related to topic at academic conferences in 2016 (titled “Racing to the bottom? Or to the top? How environmental regulation, pollution reduction capabilities and firm multinationality influence international expansion of MNEs”).
Will submit second paper (titled “Racing to the bottom? Or to the top? How environmental regulation, pollution reduction capabilities and firm multinationality influence international expansion of MNEs”) to international journal for review.

| Causes of Carryover |
The balance occurred because I delayed my purchase of additional data. In order to fully use the pollution data at Japanese manufacturing facilities I am collecting (described in point 9.1), I need to purchase financial and performance data on Japanese firms. Because I was still organizing the raw data, I was not sure exactly of the which firms data I will need to purchase yet.

| Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
I will combine the balance with my current year balance to purchase the firm performance data to link to the firm pollution data. I will also use the funds to support travel to international conferences to present my research related to the two completed projects I described in "9. summary of research achievement".
