Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Wrote paper exploring issue of environmental technologies and international location choice of Japanese firms. Presented paper at international academic conferences in USA and EU. An earlier paper tied to the research project, which provided the intellectual foundation for the current research, was accepted for journal publication. Finally, I cleaned dataset on amount, type and location of pollution at facilities throughout Japan. Began process of linking that data to additional data set (recently purchased with Kakenhi funds as part of ongoing research project) containing firm-level accounting data on Japanese firms. Conducting preliminary analysis to focus future data cleaning and collection efforts in support of draft of working paper detailing findings.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Current situation is proceeding largely according to plan to draft papers and collect/clean data based on ongoing findings and research. The only notable change was an advancement of FY2017 Kakenhi funds to FY 2016 to facilitate purchase of Tokyo Shoko Research Data. This data set provides firm-level financial data instrumental to conducting statistical analysis of firm pollution activities. With this data, the plan has been proceeding smoothly up to present.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I am presently finishing initial organization of pollution data on Japanese firms. Because this data is quite large, cleaning and organization is a very labor intensive process. I am therefore also conducting preliminary analyses in order to focus my efforts on specific subsets of that data. In conjunction these efforts will yield a working dataset at some point during the summer in 2017. With the working data set, I can conduct statistical analyses of patterns of Japanese firm pollution within Japan. From there, I will produce a working paper for additional presentation at international conferences and seminars in Japan beginning in the second half of 2017. Based on feedback received from those efforts, I will proceed with drafting a final paper for submission to international journals.
