Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The research was designed to develop an integrative leadership model that could be effective on enhancing innovative behaviors of employees in the Asian context, Japan, Korea and China. Most of research efforts have focused on developing a valid research framework based on literature review and constructive discussion by attending national and international conferences and workshops. Through the focused efforts and reviews by academic professionals and practitioners, a research framework was solidified and prepared for the scientific test.
Base on the framework, the principal researcher collected a preliminary survey data in Japan, China, and Korea. Findings from the statistical analysis showed intriguing results on the effective leadership behaviors and their operating mechanisms that intervene the relationship between leadership behaviors and innovative behaviors. Particularly, as hypothesized, cultural values were influential factors that could explain different effects of leadership behaviors in respective countries. Even if the survey was conducted at the individual level, the findings support our hypothesized model that presumed that cultural values moderates the effects of leadership behaviors, which corroborates the implicit leadership theory and leadership contingency view.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Overall the research is going well by now. As scheduled, a testable research framework was developed and initial survey collection in the research contexts was conducted. However, considering the broad spectrum of the present study, more careful and structured resource management should be required. Contrary to study carried out in a local context, the procedural and methodological equity should be guaranteed in the international research. Thus, more resources will be invested to collect the valid and reliable data that could realize the research framework. Currently, the researcher is promising to have more convincing data in all the three target countries, Japan, Korea, and China by taking the multi-level approach. However, in case if it looks impossible, a single-level approach which uses responses only from employees’ side will be taken to finalize the research. Even if this research takes the single-level approach, the interview data added will enrich the research findings, which finally contributes to raising the significance of the research.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

As done by now, the research will be conducted following the research plan. As planned, further survey and interview data collection will be conducted in Japan, Korea, and China to corroborate the current research findings. Concurrently, the first draft will be finalized and the outcomes will be shared with academic professionals in the local and international conferences. Through the review process, more refined version of draft will be completed and it will be submitted to the journal, Journal of World Business or Asia Pacific Journal of Management.

Causes of Carryover

The research fund unpaid in the fiscal year of 2015 is mainly due to the payment procedure involved in the data collection. Survey data collection was conducted by hiring a survey agency and the expenses claimed by the agency generally was made after completing the work and being reviewed by the researcher. Thus, the time difference between the time of the work done and the real time for the payment had the balance to be carried over to next fiscal year.

Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget

The balance carried over to this fiscal year will be paid to the survey agency and efficiently used according to the research plan.
