Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The project was divided into two parts: gadolinium (Gd) concentration measurements with an Atomic Absorption Spectromenter (AAS) and Gd concentration measurements with Gd magnetic properties. This overview will be divided into two parts too. : - Measurements of Gd concentration with an AAS: In 2015 the tests started using tantalum (Ta) and Wolfram (W) plates. By 2016 very good results were achieved with both Ta and W. Each material has its advantages and its conveniences: Ta is a material very easy to work with but it is less resistant to high temperatures. W is more difficult to shape and fit in the AAS' cuvettes but it is much more resistant to high temperatures. In 2017 we were planning to write a paper and publish it with these results but Hitachi (the AAS cuvettes manufacturer) stopped the production of the cuvettes had been using until then and we are now trying to adjust our design to the new cuvettes, make sure our technique works fine with them and then publish. We think this is just a temporary delay. - Concentration measurements using the Gd magnetic properties. We had been doing several designs of the device but so far we didn't reach the required sensitivity to do an actual accurate concentration measurement. We think that we may have done a mistake in evaluating the feasibility of this technique applied to measuring Gd concentrations. As demonstrated in our proposal the principle is correct and feasible but given our budget constrainst to build this device, it may not be possible. Nevertheless, we are still trying and did not give up yet.
