Keywords | Nickel Phosphorus / Cold Neutron |
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Work during FY2016 was focussed on the preparation of material samples for characterization with Cold Neutron Reflectometry and the analysis of the results. Non magnetic Nickel Phosphorus (NiP) alloy samples with different Phosphorus concentrations have been prepared and successfully tested at J-PARC (Tokai) in June. Preliminary results were presented during a JPS meeting in September. At the same time, we prepared other guides samples for an experiment in Switzerland which aim is to determine the depolarization of Ultra Cold neutrons (UCN) while bouncing on the surface. Unfortunately, this experiment has been delayed, see the section "current status".

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
Even if the experiment in Switzerland was approved, it did not happen in FY2016 because of problem at the level of the source. As a result, the experiment was delayed by 1 FY and will happen this FY. This is the reason why we requested an extension of this Kakenhi.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The planning for the future work is the following: - April to summer 2017: finish analysis of last FY experiment and finish preparation for coming experiment - late summer - beginning of fall: beamtime at PSI. to measure the depolarization per bounce of the UCN on NiP. - fall - winter 2017: data analysis - spring 2018: writing paper, show results in conferences
|
Causes of Carryover |
We were supposed to have beam time for this project during FY2016 but the UCN source got an issue and the beam time was not given. We will have this beam time in FY2017. For this purpose, and extension of 1 year has been requested and approved.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
We plan to use the budget as initially presented : mainly travel expense for Switzerland, material transportation and small guide parts building. For this, a total of 1,518,116 JPY will be used.
