Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the last fiscal year I could: 1) Analyze changes in radiolarian assemblages from 30 plankton tow samples collected in the northern East China Sea. Base on this work, I could reach my first purpose by clarifying the vertical distribution of radiolarians in this area. The results of this works has been submitted and accepted in a peer-reviewed journal. 2) Analyze 89 surface sediment samples from the northwestern Pacific. These samples were provided by the Geological Survey of Japan, JAMSTEC . In these samples I have analyzed changes in radiolarian assemblages for clarify their geographic distribution and their affinity with sea water temperature changes in order to construct a transfer function enabling the reconstruction of past sea water temperature. The analysis are over, and now I am preparing a paper for communicate my results. 3) Analyze 70 sediment core samples from IODP Exp. 346 Site U1429, located in the east China Sea in order to recosntruct past oceanographic changes in this area for the last 200, 000 years. The analysis are not over but progressing well.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The works are progressing as well as ecpected: 1) I could finish as initially planned the clarification of radiolarian vertical distribution in the East China Sea and publish it into a journal. 2) I could finished the clarification of the radiolarian geographical distribution in the northwestern Pacific. In this study, we clearly could define taxa related to Kuroshio Current and Oyashio Current. 3) I could defined a transfer function enabling past sea water temperature estimation. This transfer function have a very good statistical data, and its accuracy seem to be close to geochemical data. All the works are finished and only is remaining to communicate the results.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For this fiscal years, I am planning to: 1) write a paper concerning the radiolarians geographical distribution in the Northwestern Pacific and the estimation of past sea water temperature based on radiolarian transfer function. 2) finish the analysis of changes in radiolarian assemblages in sediment cores collected from Exp 346 Site U1429, where 40 samples is remaining. Then, I will analyze the data for try to reconstruct past oceanographic changes of the northern East China Sea. 3) Analyze plankton samples collected off Kyushu Island for clarify radiolarian distribtution. The samples were collected last year.

Causes of Carryover |
Initially, I planned to send one more manuscript for english editing and pay the corresponding article publication fees.

I am planning to use the incurring amount in english editing fee of manuscripts, and pay publication fee for free access to scientific results obtained during this project.
