Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In my proposed research plan, strategies for building high efficiency organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite-based solar cells with long lifetimes were described. In FY2016, we have made important progress, e.g. 8 peer-refereed papers have been published acknowledging Kakenhi Grant Number 15K17925 (see Journal Articles section). I was invited to write a review paper [3]. The main findings from our research are summarized below: (1) As described in references [1,4,8], In FY2016 we have achieved significant understanding on the fundamental aspects of the degradation mechanisms in CH3NH3PbI3, which is currently the perovskite material widely studied and applied for solar cell applications. The long lifetime of perovskite solar cells is a major issue impeding further commercialization. Our work showed that I2 generation from the normal solar cell operation conditions leads to a self-sustaining degradation, which represents an inherent degradation mechanism limiting the long-term stability of iodine-containing perovskite based solar cells. Subsequent strategies for improving stability are being studied in my group. (2) We have improved our understanding on the MA-treatment of perovskite thin films that helps smoothen the morphology [2,5]. The quality of perovskite films influences perovskite solar cell efficiencies. Our proposed method is shown to significantly improve the grain boundary-related issues. (3) We have also gained further fundamental knowledge on the spiro-MeOTAD layer, which its optimization is essential for efficient hole extraction and transport [6,7].
