Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The research topic is development and verification of a three-dimensional prediction model for the ultimate seismic performance of link-bearing connection in a cable-stayed bridges in consideration of pounding and longitudinal slip. The main objectives of the research are:
1.To observe pattern regarding vibration response of the bridge during different scale of earthquakes from past events on Yokohama-Bay Bridg(earthquake from 1990-2011). 2.To determine behavior of link-bearing connection in longitudinal direction. 3.To determine pounding behavior between pylon and girder from earthquake records. 4.To develop a three-dimensional finite element model of the bridge that can describe the lateral pounding behavior and longitudinal slip-stick behavior. 5.To test the model for several earthquake scenarios including level 2 earthquake and nearfield earthquake.
The research consists of two parts. Works described in point 1,2,3 are conducted in 1st year, work in point 4 is in 2nd year and work in point 5 will be conducted in the 3rd year.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

From five main objectives of the research, analysis regarding the objectives no.1,2 and 3 has been carried out and submitted for publication (reference 1,3,4). The pounding behavior between pylon and girder was established and numerical model to described the behavior is now being verified. The model has some limitation since the contact problem does not include damping effect. This behavior is now being examined and incorporated in three-dimensional model of bridge.
In the past year (2nd year) a complex three-dimensional model of Yokohama-Bay cable-stayed bridge has been developed. Pounding effects were considered in the model. Some of the results of the model has been published and presented at the 16th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Plan for next year:
1.Verifying the non-linear longitudinal stick-slip model of link-bearing connection in three-dimensional finite element model.
2.Test for the model for nearfield earthquakes using simulated ground motions from 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.
3.Finalizing publications on the research results, including submission to journal papers all works that presented in the conferences.
