Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The study was undertaken to gain insight into how to support women diagnosed with cervical precancerous lesions for their continued attendance of follow-up consultations by identifying what kinds of stigma they faced after diagnosis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six women who had been diagnosed with high-grade dysplasia and successfully completed treatment. The data were qualitatively and inductively analysed. The average age of the six subjects was 35.6. 11 categories were extracted as stigma. No “enacted stigma” was extracted but the subjects faced “felt stigma” such as fear of being branded as promiscuous and self-blame, which may affect their family relationship and social life and discourage them from attending follow-ups. At the same time, they had “project stigma” such as embracing the diagnosis and wanting to share their experience and the importance of screening with others.
