Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purpose of this research is to develop a radiographic image tracking system to track respiration-induced tumor motion in real-time for adaptive tumor following radiation therapy. The tracking system will be able to provide conformable tumor motion information and allows the treatment device to accurately deliver high-dose conformable radiation to the moving target during the treatment. The research achievements in the FY2015 are summarized as follows. (1) Three phantom and six clinical image data sets including 4-D CT, kilo-voltage (kV) images, and megavoltage (MV) images have been acquired at Hirosaki university hospital. (2) A kernel-based algorithm has been developed for tracking tumor position in kV images. The tracking algorithm has been evaluated using the phantom and clinical kV image sequences. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method was capable of accurately locating the tumor position in low contrast kV images and being robust against the image deformation. (3) A level set method-based algorithm has been developed for tracking tumor boundary in MV images. The algorithm has also been evaluated using three data sets including digital phantom image, phantom MV images, and clinical MV images. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm was able to track the tumor boundary in MV images and has a potential for tumor following radiotherapy application.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
In the FY2015, the research has been conducted steadily, and the progress has been made smoothly according to the research plan. A paper about tracking the tumor boundary in MV images has been published by a prime international journal (Medical Physics). Several related researches on the tumor tracking in kV and MV images have also been published and presented orally in domestic and international conferences.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
According to the research plan, the main research work in FY2016 will be focused on the following four tasks. (1) Phantom and clinical data acquisition. In order to evaluate the performance of our tracking system, phantom and clinical radiographic images data acquisition will be continued at Tohoku university hospital and Hirosaki university hospital. (2) Implementation of real-time tracking system. A real-time tracking system will be implemented tentatively based on a GPGPU computational platform. (3) System evaluation and improvement. Experiments on phantom and clinical images will be conducted for system evaluation. On the base of experimental results, the current tracking algorithms will be further improved for clinical application. (4) Related papers will be submitted to prime international journal or conferences.
