Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
- The optical buffering module which double A-line speed has been built - The optical buffering module was connected between swept laser and Jones matrix-based optical coherence tomography (JM-OCT) system. - The PMD was mathematically modeled and its method to correct the PMD was derived. - It was known that an introduction of two polarizers into the probe path and reference path of JM-OCT transform the PMD problem into global complex modulation of Jones matrix. - And then, by correcting the the modulated spectral envelopes, the PMD problem was solved. - By correcting the PMD of buffered path, it was possible to reduce the side lobe of PSF of buffered path. And it was possible to obtain almost similar JM-OCT image with that of original JM-OCT system, even with doubled A-line speed.

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
It was possible to get similar image with double speed by adapting optical buffering module and PMD correction. And the 2nd step plan of 'PMD free and passive optical buffering module' was tested by using two Faraday rotator mirrors and polarization beam splitting (PBS) fiber coupler. It was confirmed that the optical buffering module does not suffered by PMD. However the probe power was not sufficient to perform in vivo human retina imaging.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
- Replacing Faraday rotator mirror with high efficient ones. - Utilizing Booster Optical Amplifier. - For the worst case, Think about modified scanning protocol which is applicable for motion correction. Because the fundamental goal of high speed imaging engine was to reduce the motion artifacts. It might be good to think about different approach from the reduction of motion artifact to the correction of motion artifacts.

Causes of Carryover |
Because the research was progressed well, it is not needed to purchase extra hardwares. Because the grant was opened after one international conference date, it was not possible to use the grant for the business trip.

I will the grant for the business trip for two international conferences. Purchase extra hardware and software to advance the research works.
