Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The first project on child care has generated two papers. Most of the past year has been devoted to revising and resubmitting the papers for publication. The first paper, ``Evaluating the Effects of Child Care Policies on Maternal Labor Supply and Children's Cognitive Development,'' has been resubmitted at the Journal of Human Resources. The second paper, co-authored with Professor Petra Todd (University of Pennslyvania), is called ``Assessing the Performance of Nonexperimental Estimators for Evaluating Head Start.'' This paper has been accepted for publication at the Journal of Labor Economics. In addition, this work was presented at a Symposium on “Analysis of Social Environments in Childhood on Human Capital Formation”, Gakushuin University, Tokyo, Japan, February 2017.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The second project is still on going. The topic is on the evaluation of social insurance over the lifecycle using a model of labor supply and savings that features wage, fertility, marriage, divorce and health shocks with unemployment, medical and disability insurance, welfare and pensions using Swedish register data. Currently we are examining data, writing and programming the model. Given the extensive work devoted to the child care projects, progress has been slower on this project. In the Fall 2017, Professor Holter (University of Oslo) will again visit GRIPS and the University of Tokyo and we plan to make additional progress when he visits.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2017-18, I will continue to use the funds to travel to visit co-authors in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Oslo, Norway, for purchasing necessary supporting materials such as books, for hiring any needed RAs and for traveling for conference and seminar opportunities. If the paper second paper at Journal of Human Resources is accepted, then more time will be devoted to the project using Swedish data in 2017-18.
