Research Abstract

1. Trends in aerosol optical properties over East Asian waters seen in satellite data
We have collected all the low resolution SeaWiFS data of east Asia obtained in 1998-2004 and processed the data to produce monthly mean imageries of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) as well as Angstrom exponent. Investigation of temporal variabilities in these parameters at six different oceanic areas revealed increasing trend in Angstrom exponent, suggesting increase in submicron fraction of aerosol particles.
2. Web page for aerosol imagery
We have been also operating a satellite-derived aerosol imagery web page, which carries daily images of TOMS Aerosol Index and SeaWiFS-derived oceanic spectral reflectances in addition to the images of AOT and. Angstrom exponent. To support aerosol observations conducted during the intensive observation period of the current project of Atmospheric Environmental Impacts of Aerosols in East Asia (AIE), we have also operated the web page in a quasi-real time manner in December 2002, in May 2003, and in May-July 2004.
3. Remote sensing of forest fire aerosol
As an effort of algorithm development, a method of observing Siberian fire aerosol that uses GLI ultra-violet bands was studied.
4. Optical properties of Asian dust particles
In terms of modeling optical properties of Asian dust, we conducted two kinds of study. The first is to estimate refractive index of Asian dust by comparing the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance derived from satellite with that of calculated obtained by a radiative transfer simulation. Another approach is to measure particle size distribution of ground-sampled Asian dust particles using Coulter counter against dust particles suspended in solution. From the additional absorntion measurement of the collected mineral narticles the imaginary refractive index was derived.
