Research Abstract

1. Introduction
Self-organization on the mesoscale is a powerful tool for preparation of micron-scale ordered structures. Driving force for the pattern formation are non-equilibrium and nonlinear dynamic processes occurring in an evaporating organic solution.
2. Results and Discussion
2-1. Dewetting and microdome formation. Even though we reported on the formation of regular arrays of polymer microdroplets, so-called microdomes already a decade ago, there is ongoing research in the field. We found that polymer microdomes can reversibly shape change and polymer blends form hierarchic microdomes. Related to this research topic is also the aggregate control of organic dyes, either in a polymer matrix or neat.
2-2. Preparation of crystal fibers. Dewetting can be used to prepare high aspect ratio crystal fibers of aromatic electron donors and/or acceptors and charge transfer complexes. An organic field effect transistor based on the crystal fibers of TCNQ was produced.
2-3. Reactive honeycomb films. Casting of polymer solutions under high humidity from non-water-soluble solvents leads to the formation of microporous films with high periodicity. We prepared organic-inorganic hybrid films for applications as photocatalysts and also found that chemical and photochemical crosslinking leads to a significant increase in thermal and solvent stability.
