Research Abstract |
We analyzed data from deep radar sounding of the Antarctic ice sheet. By analysis of the radar data, we first investigated wave propagation in wide area in Antarctica. Subsequently, we studied effects from crystal orientation fabrics, dynamical condition of the ice sheet, bottom environment and impurity. Outline of the result is as follows. 1.In the first fiscal year, we made numerical experiments using a wave propagation model. 2.We compared the simulated results with the observational data. 3.We assessed internal structure of the Antarctic ice sheet. We put special emphasis on the following points. (1)I identified and analyzed distribution of the isochrones (constant time horizon). (2)We investigated three dimensional distribution of the wave scattering mechanisms within the ice sheet. (3)We identified echo free zone within the Antarctic ice sheet. 4,We made a computer program to archive old data of ice radar. Old data is recorded as video image, which we needed to digitize as numerical data. Overall, we made better archiving the old data and studied in detail potential of the ice radar data for the ice dynamics study in Antarctica.
