Research Abstract |
It is what we can be proud of that our research project produced numerous, and very solid outputs in the three years. Our research made an epoch-making progress in the study of US political parties and their transformation on three fronts. First, having focused on the liberal and moderate wings of the Democratic Party, we proved that, compared with the liberal wings that are supported by many established interest groups outside the party at the grass-roots level such as unions, feminist groups, or environmental movements, the moderates or "the New Democrats", are not equipped with the interest groups outside the Democratic Party to support them, other than part of the export oriented of high technology. Second, we published an article on how the Republican conservatives have trained and educated the younger generation, focusing on the Leadership Institute. This is a part of the study of the so called political infrastructure in the US. The Democrats have an advantage on campus, but the Republicans are catching up or even overtaking in think tanks, foundations, or media. We believe that this is a critically important area for further research. Third, we have analyzed the state of the conservative coalition on the Republican side. This is the very core of the mechanism through which the Republican Party became more conservative in the 1990s. It seems that in the 2000, some cracks and loosening have appeared in this once solid coalition. Overall, we could point out the overbearing importance of the continuous support from outside groups, the creation of the infrastructure, and the maintenance of the stable coalition as a force and a factor to transform the ideological outlook of political parties.
