| Research Abstract |
This project researched the theory and practice of spiritual education.
1.We compiled the leading English academic journal articles on spiritual education in order to review the trends in spiritual education in the West. Becker details these in his report. Hayashi also analyzed the current state of spiritual education as reported in Japanese academic journals.
2.We also surveyed the state of spiritual education in America, England, Finland, Russia, and Turkey. The largest body of available data was derived from Finnish spiritual education and the British PSHE curriculum, but neither demonstrated significant development of spiritual education outside of a religious context.
3.In order to evaluate the nature of spiritual education in Japan's current school curriculum, Iwata collected textbooks on moral education from across the country. No library had previously made such an exhaustive collection; these materials are now in custody of the library of Osaka University of Education. These materials display a manifestly spiritual orientation, but their effective utilization depends upon the skills of each classroom teacher.
4.Tanida and Tokumaru developed a prototype text for possible use of Japanese junior high school classes. We created CD-ROMs entitled "Death" and "Loss" and conducted pilot classes using these materials. We also proposed specific methods of communication prerequisite for effective education in Japanese school classrooms.
5.To further improve Japanese society's understanding of these issues, we invited numerous leading authorities in the fields of spiritual education and death education from America as we all as across Japan, to conduct workshops in Joetsu and two international symposia in Kyoto. These attracted a total attendance of approximately a thousand interested scholars and citizens.
