Research Abstract

Using Arabidopsis mutants defective in exine or pollen coat formation as well as using Brassica species showing self-incompatibility and interspecific incompatibility, we are planning to identify genes involved in exine and pollen coat formation and signals for pollen dehydration, interaction between pollen and stigmas such as self-incompatibility and interspecific incompatibility.
Our study have demonstrated that formation of primexine, that is a scaffold of exine, and bacula, that is a column of exine, is sporophytically regulated. We have published several original papers and reviews, one of which an invited review in International Journal of Plant Developmental Biology. We report that pollen exine pattern formation is dependent on three major developmental processes, sporopollenin synthesis, primexine formation and callose formation, in Arabidopsis thaliana. We also reports application aspects for plant Breeding in a Japanese journal, Breeding Research.
As for the interaction between pollen and stigma, we demonstrated that region III and IV is important for recognition specificity of SP11, which is a pollen determinant of self-incompatibility. We also found that interspecific incompatibility is a quantitative trait and, therefore, developed original DNA markers for QTL analysis. We are ready for mapping of this trait.
