Research Abstract |
This study has the aim to clarify historical-institutional factors, market factors and other social-economic factors which influences vertical integration processes in the agro-food complex of the former USSR countries (Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine). The study has confirmed that the process has occurred only in the conditions of agrarian reforms in the 1990s (land reform, privatization of agricultural enterprises and other social-economic transformation) and improved macroeconomic environment after the 1998 financial crisis. The study shows that this phenomenon is quite different in forms, content and spheres from the vertical integration forms which can be observed in usual market economies. It has also revealed the short-term factors which enhances the integration process in recent years. Although vertical integration has been the main mechanism which helps agricultural production to survive and to be modernize, the study shows that it is not a sustainable form of long-term development of agriculture and rural society in post-soviet countries.
