Research Abstract |
The objectives of this research are to construct digital archives as a means of collecting and archiving oral histories in Japan as well as to conduct research on legal and ethical considerations in putting oral histories on the web. The first two years, 2004-2005, were spent mainly on collecting data from advanced institutions in the field of digital archiving of oral histories. Two consecutive workshops were organized with the speakers from the U.S., both of which were co-sponsored by the Japan Oral History Association. The two programs provided not only the investigators but oral historians from all over Japan with a hands-on learning experience on the subject. During 2004-2005, the head investigator visited Singapore National Archive, and attended the University of California Advanced Oral History Summer Institute. She was also trained at NPO Densho, a forerunner of oral history digital archive projects in the U.S. Based on the knowledge which investigators had acquired internationally, the final year, 2006, was spent on actual construction of Hokusei Digital Archive (HDA) on the web. The head investigator visited the U.S. in order to properly conduct interviews for the archive, and attended two international conferences in 2006, reporting on the promises and perils of putting oral histories on the web. Research results are published in the final report, detailing all the programs we have conducted in the three years with this grant-in-aid for scientific research (C).
