Research Abstract

Speed dependent sliding resistance of ski was studied in detail. When sliding speed of a ski is appreciable, the coefficient of frictional resistance converges to the value (ca 0.05). This is explained by the melt-water lubrication theory.
At a low sliding speed, less than 1 m/s, the value was still high and the obvious influence of the ski and the snow parameters in the frictional resistance coefficient were observed by using the rotate truck method (a rotating snow track with a static model ski) and the natural sliding method (an angle changeable snow slope with a sliding model ski). It is reported that the frictional resistance is smaller at higher temperature up to-3℃ under usual ski sliding speeds. On the other hands, a new finding of this period is the frictional resistance was larger at higher temperature under very low sliding speeds.
The behavior of the frictional resistance under several running conditions was obtained. These included several types of snow, different densities and temperatures of snow. Measuring equipments for the surface of test snow conditions were developed.
