Research Abstract |
We developed a new method of defining the sea structure near the surface, by using water temperature data measured at different layers, in order to forecast the increase or decrease of phytoplankion. To estimate whether each layer is stratified or mixed, long period components were extracted from each layer with fluctuating water temperature using a numerical filter, and values were compared between layers. Cases that showed a large temperature difference between layers suggested that the sea structure near the surface was stratified, and that was attributed to sunlight or the inflow of river water. Temperature stratification due to the difference in water temperature developed in summer, and disappeared in winter. Salinity stratification was independent of the season. In contrast, a small temperature difference between layers suggested that the sea structure near the surface was mixed, and this was attributed to gale force wind. Though the cause or the mechanism of these phenomena have yet to be sufficiently clarified, we believe this method will provide useful clues for future investigations concerning the increase or decrease of phytoplankton.
