Research Abstract |
The target at the first year was construction of the system of making a database of statistical tables. However, there were unexpected difficulties when we made the OCR software correctly recognize the British style figures shown in historical statistical tables. Such difficulties were overcome to some degree by the improvement of the recognition accuracy through the learning function of the OCR software. It can be said that the system was constructed, and the trial run and fine-tuning of the constructed system were succeeded. In the second year, we concentrated on the improvement of the speed of making of the database. The strategy of making the format beforehand and dropping the numeric data read with OCR was tried, and the speed of making of the database rose to twice or more. However British style figures were hard for the OCR software to handle, and the correction was indispensable. It was up to The Seventh Annual Report(for the year 1841) to complete making the database by the end of the year. Judging from the progress to the previous year, we decided to complete making only the Poor Law Commissioner's Annual reports into the database. Data were input by the method which was developed in the previous year. When the first half of the year ended, we judged that a further narrowing was necessary, and removed all statistical tables pertaining to the unions from the object of making the database. By changing the policy several times, we were able to complete the database of the statistical appendices of the Poor Law Commissioner's Annual reports by the end of the year. The performance of the above database is not beyond the "Computerization data" level, and therefore we will modify it into the general-purpose type system with high convenience in the future.
