Research Abstract |
To develop the study on youth subcultures during the postwar era in Japan, this project was intended to reconsider the terminology and methodology for studying them depending on "Frame Analysis : An Essay on the Organization of Experience"written by Erving Goffman who is one of most famous sociologists, to gather archives, i.e. magazine back issues, newspaper articles and visual footages, and to make an analysis based on them. During this two year, I wrote four papers, ‘Concerning Youth Subcultures in the Postwar Era' series and five notes concerning this theme. Added to these papers, I had written some papers previously. Through writing them, I had examined almost eleven youth subcultures which represented the trends and Zeitgeist at each time. Now, I'm compiling all these papers into a book and by means of editing and rewriting them, I would like to make my opinion clearer. My opinion is that in the late 1970's there was an epoch-making change not only in youth culture but also in Japanese society totally. And then, I would like to apply the knowledge I got during this term to some projects I participated. Firstly, "Material Culture and Information Culture in Commercial Films" project had been done at the International Research Center of Japanese Studies. A book organizing this research project is edited now and will be published in this year. Secondly "The Media History of Television Culture" project had been based Grant-in-aid for Scientific Research (C). A book as a result of this project will be published in this year, too. Finally, "Cultural History of Expositions in Local Regions" project is based on Grant-in-aid for Scientific Research (C). Previous to the start of this project, there were few books about Japanese youth subcultures. I think it has made the basis and developed the possibility to cross-cultural comparative studies of youth subcultures.
