Research Abstract |
EMDR(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is psychotherapy founded in 1987 by Shapiro. Because it is often the case that curative effect of EMDR is evaluated subjectively, objective evaluation is also demanded. In this study, I measured Brain Event Related Potentials when traumatic stimulus was exhibited. In ERP, I examined how the amplitude and latency of P3 that was thought to reflect a process of directly affecting recognition information processing before and after EMDR. In addition, I examined whether traumatic memory was short-term memory or long-term memory and whether the curative effect of EMDR was different. In the first, I examined whether an unpleasant memory was desensitized by EMDR with P3, which was a psychophysiological index. As a result, the P3 amplitude decreased significantly in EMDR group, and the value of SUDS decreased. Based upon the foregoing, the effectiveness of EMDR was clarified in not only subjective evaluation but also brain event related potentials, which was an objective index. In the second, I examined whether the expression of effect of EMDR included a difference as a variable when a traumatic experience was less than 2 years (short-term memory) and more than 2 years (long-term memory). As a result, in relation to the expression of effect of EMDR for traumatic memory of a short term (for less than 2 years), it was desensitized by exhibition of bilateral stimuli, and the P3 amplitude for relevant stimuli decreased and the value of SUDS after the EMDR operation decreased compared to before the operation. In addition, in relation to the expression of effect of EMDR for a long-term memory, the P3 amplitude for relevant stimuli decreased by exhibition of bilateral stimuli, and SUDS value decreased. Based upon the foregoing, as for the curative effect of EMDR, the same thing became clear irrespective of whether a traumatic experience was a short-term memory or a long-term memory.
