Research Abstract

Recently, inter-vehicular distance sensors using a micro wave have been implemented for some classy cars, but the degree of accuracy and the cost of the inter-vehicular distance sensor are not sufficient for its needs yet.
We study a method to use a Wigner distribution for the signal processing of the inter-vehicular distance sensor. The Wigner distribution is a non-stationary spectral analysis method, and the processing of the distance sensor need a processing of the spectral analysis in a frequency modulation continuous wave method and a Doppler method. We propose a method using the Wigner distribution for the instantaneous spectral analysis for the distance sensors.
In the spectral analysis using the Wigner distortion, the major problem is an existence of some artificial peaks called cross component, the cross components are a cause of degradation the accuracy of sensors using the Wigner distribution. We also proposed an universal suppressing method of cross components in the Wigner distribution.
It was discovered the accuracy of the distance sensors has an advantage in the method using the Wigner distribution rather than the method using a normal fast Fourier transform by some computer simulations and experiments in the condition of the abrupt change of the inter-vehicular distance.
Real time processing is also need for the actual inter-vehicular distance sensors, we have developed a real time Wigner distribution processing system by using a digital signal processor. The real time processing is possible for 2048 points Wigner distribution with a suppressing of the cross components by a C6713 DSP.
