Research Abstract

The remediation of contaminated soils by means of combined use of cyclodextrins and activated carbon was studied and the following results were obtained :
1.The solubilities of the model toxic compounds, biphenyl and nile red, were enhanced by the addition of RM-β-CD. This implies that the use of RM-β-CD is effective for the removal of the toxic compounds from the contaminated soils.
2.The biphenyl and nile red sorption isotherms of activated carbon and soils were well correlated by Freudlich equation.
3.The biphenyl adsorbed on soils was removed by mixing it with aqueous RM-β-CD solution and activated carbons. The floating activated carbon was found more effective than other activated carbons in the removal of absorbed biphenyl mainly because it could be more easily separated from the soils.
4.A twin screw kneader was employed to knead the soils with RM-β-CD for removal of nile red absorbed on the soils. The removal efficiency was maximum when the moisture content of soils was 35%.
5.Four kneading methods were compared for the efficiency in removal of nile red from the soils. Of all the kneaders studied, the twin screw kneader which has the highest kneading torque was the most effective one in removing nile red. This means that the kneading efficiency is the predominant factor in the removal of the absorbed compounds.
