Research Abstract

A low-cost, small size and light weighted buoy to monitoring the seawater temperature in the scallop cultivation area has been developed in this study. The buoy is designed to measure vertical temperature distribution. This is done by connecting the thermometers in series so that the changes in the vertical temperature distribution can be captured in real time. To simplify the architecture of sensor communication, each thermometer is connected by a multidrop interface. A cellular phone is employed for wireless communication so that the sensor network system can be easily established by connecting to the Internet via a dial-up connection (PPP). Experiments have been carried out in the fishing port of Usuya, on the West coast of Hokkaido, Japan from December 2005 to March 2006. Now we are executing the design and the development of the low power control board of the buoy, and executing the programming of the thermometer corresponding to the multidrop interface. Three buoys will be installed to the scallop cultivation area of Usuya in the summer of 2006.
Trial products of the system for measuring the seabed topography by fishing echo sounders have also been developed in this study. The microcomputer has been employed to connect a fishing echo sounder so that measured data of water-depth and position data can be accumulated in Web database server automatically through the Internet. Since the bathymetric chart generated by the records of a fishing vessel is in good agreement with the "Basic chart of the sea" represented by the Japan Coast Guard, it can be said that the present system is applicable to the practical use in fishery.
