Research Abstract

The purpose of this study is to apply the characteristics of the three alloplasmic lines of eggplant with the cytoplasm of the wild Solanum species, S.anguivi, S.kurzii and S.violaceum, for eggplant breeding. Summary of research results are shown as follows.
1.Invetstigation of fertility clarified that all the three alloplasmic lines showed stable male sterility and high seed fertility.
2.Growth, yield and cold resistance of the three alloplasmic lines in a plastic house did not show the significant difference with those of the respective parental eggplant lines.
3.Morphology of the three alloplasmic lines did not show the significant difference with those of the respective parental eggplant lines, except for male organs.
4.PCR-RFLP analysis in mitochondrial DNA of the regions srRNA V7 and nad7 3-4 was clarified to be useful for cytoplasm identification.
5.Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) analysis was clarified to be useful as genetic markers in eggplant and the wild Solanum species.
6.It newly clarified the possibility that the alloplasmic eggplant with the cytoplasm of S.virginianum showed male sterility.
