| Research Abstract |
Premature ovarian failure (POF) is defined as the cessation of menses for > 6 months in women less than 40 years old, and affects about 1% of the female population (Coulam et al., 1986). The fragile X mental retardation gene (FMR1) is known to be associated with POF (Uzielli et al., 1999). It has been reported that POF occurs at an increased frequency in women carrying premutaions in the FMR1 gene (50-200 CGG trinucleotide repeats in the 5' prime untranslated region of the FMR1 gene) (Conway et al., 1998; Uzielli et al., 1999). The FMR1 premutation may influence this gene expression, resulting in POF. In addition, it is suggested that FMR1 gene products are involved in ovarian function. However, nothing is known about whether FMR1 gene products express in the ovary or not. In the present study, we examined the possible expression of FMR1 gene in the ovary. We found that FMR1 mRNA and protein expressed primarily in granulosa and theca cells of the rat ovary. Also, treatments of several steroids involving in ovarian function influenced ovarian FMR1 expression. The results support the idea that FMR1 gene products are involved in ovarian function.
