Research Abstract |
We developed and/or modified the several new approaches to the inferior aspects of the skull base, for example, Le Fort I osteotomy approach, Facial dismasking approach, Orbito-zygomatic approach, Maxillary swing approach, etc. Using the method of macroscopic anatomical investigation, we studied the characteristics of those approaches and the range of surgical field which is obtained by those approaches. In order to access to the deep part of the skull, two surgical procedures should be employed. The first one is soft tissue incision and elevation and the second is osteotomy and displacement of the facial skeleton. We classified various approaches to the skull base into 2 categories which are a soft tissue incision and an osteotomy and clarified that an appropriate combination of those two procedures is the most important to obtain the sufficient surgical field in the deep part of the skull base with minimum morbidity.
