Research Abstract |
High-resolution computed tomography (CT) images of the mandibles were recorded in twenty adult patients with mandibular prognathism. Inclinations of the mandibular alveolar bone surfaces on the labial and lingual aspects in the central incisor region and the inclination of the corresponding central incisor were measured in relation to the lower mandibular line projected to the mandibular mid-sagittal plane through the hypothetical center of rotation of each central incisor. Distances from the mandibular incisor root apex to the inner contour of the labial cortical bone, that to the lingual cortical bone, and the cancellous bone thickness were measured. Significant correlations of the inclinations of the mandibular alveolar bone and the central incisor with the cancellous bone thickness w ere calculated. Significant positive correlations were observed between the inclinations of the mandibular alveolar bone surfaces on the labial and lingual aspects and the inclination of the corresponding central incisor. The inclination of the mandibular central incisor was more upright than the inclination of the alveolar bone surface on the lingual aspect. The mandibular root apex was closer to the inner contour of the labial cortical bone than to the lingual cortical bone. Inclinations of the mandibular alveolar bone surface on the lingual aspect and the central incisor correlated with the cancellous bone thickness. The morphology of the alveolar bone in the central incisor region may be associated with the inclination of the corresponding central incisor in adults with mandibular prognathism. In order to diagnose the central incisor position in consideration of the boundary limit of the alveolar bone, it is important to evaluate the morphology and the size of the alveolar bone.
