Research Abstract

10月に研究助成が行われたため、本年度の研究期間は2004年10月より2005年3月であった。
2004年10月から12月にかけて、2005年1-3月に予定されていた英国調査の準備の一環として、2本のディスカッションペーパー("Toward a General Theory of the Hospital Century : Theoretical Perspectives from the Japanese Experience in the 20th Century", "Becoming Hospital Owners : the Evolution of Doctor's Career Paths in Japan from the 1870s to the 1930s")およびを取り纏めた。
1月21日より3月21日まで、The Centre for Health, Medicine and Society, Oxford Brookes Universityにvisiting scholarとして滞在し、2月1日には、同センターにおいてセミナーを開催した。また、この間、20世紀前半における医師のキャリアパスに関する資料を収集した。
同センターおよびその他の英国の大学において、国際共同研究のための議論を重ねた結果、19世紀後半から20世紀前半における医療史に関して実績の豊富なAnne Digby教授(Oxford Brookes University)、John Pickstone教授(Manchester University)と、将来的に日英両国の医療史の比較研究を進めてゆくことで合意した。先にまとめたディスカッションペーパーのうち"Toward a General Theory of the Hospital Century : Theoretical Perspectives from the Japanese Experience in the 20th Century"については、先に行われたセミナー等で一定の評価を受けたことから、加筆修正の上、The Bulletin of the History of Medicineに投稿中である。
