Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During the past year practice-based research was conducted on the theme of “Socially Engaged Art in Pacific Islands” at Kyushu University. Primary research included fieldwork and interviews on Java Island (Indonesia), Kudaka Island (Okinawa), Shodo Island (Kagawa), Molokai Island (Hawaii) and Singapore. This artistic research fueled new artworks and writings that were presented to diverse audiences both in Japan and abroad. Art activities were well-documented with photographic, video and audio records to preserve contents for future presentation. Research conducted in the field on social issues affecting islands today has advanced along with investigation of archives relating to island histories.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Research results were presented at public exhibits held in Fukuoka City, Tokyo, Yame (Fukuoka), Iwaki (Fukushima), Singapore, and time was made for the preparation of past artworks for display in new formats in Shodo Island (Kagawa) and Portland (Oregon, U.S.). New publications included, “Social Climates of Sunset House” for Setouchi Triennale 2016 and the book “The Sea We See”. Two papers were delivered at international academic conferences held in New York City and Tokyo, as well as the screening of a documentary film on the artwork “Sunset House: The House as Language of Being" for an academic conference held in Kyoto.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

During the upcoming year research will be focused on presentations, exhibitions and publications on artistic engagement occurring on islands. Research will continue with greater depth and analysis utilized to achieve artworks that synthesize oral histories, alternative views of the sea and society made visible through art. New artworks will be completed for exhibitions held in Chiba, Indonesia, Fukuoka, Oita, and Singapore. Artist writings will be refined and submitted for future publication. The results of this research will be shared in multiple forums for scholars and artists to access these unique accomplishments.
