Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The research objective of this project was satisfactorily achieved; both the phenotypic characterization and the identification of the genomic regions associated with pelvic-fin brooding in Sulawesi medaka were successfully achieved. Surprisingly, the results of this projects indicated that few loci might control pelvic fin brooding in Sulawesi medaka suggesting that this complex adaptation could evolve rapidly, and with few or no intermediary stages.
Clear differences were found between the morphology and reproductive cycle of both species. O. eversi presented longer pelvic fins, a deeper concavity, and longer periods for “carrying-eggs” and “gonads-maturation” than O. dopingdopingensis; and as expected F2 hybrid individuals showed intermediary values in all of the evaluated variables.
