Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Research activities at RIKEN consisted mainly on calibration of detectors and the design and development of complex algorithms for space application. I studied and characterize different detectors technologies, managing both hardware and software development. The final goal is to to achieve a better knowledge of their performance so that ir will be possible to adapt them to design a series of affordable radiation detectors which will allow for increasing awareness by the general public of the safety of the products of the region exposed by the Fukushima fallout. In particular, I participated in various activities related to prototyping, assembly and calibration tests for missions under development in the JEM-EUSO framework, such as:1.Hardware: Optimization and testing of prototypes based on solid state detectors such as Silicon Photomultipliers, and Multi-Anode Photomultipliers used by the Mini-EUSO experiment; 2.Calibration and Tests: Validation of the statistical distributions of the signals (dark field and flat field calibrations) and multiple tests for the Mini-EUSO experiment;3.Software: Development of a robust control software for automatic data acquisition with the secondary cameras on board the Mini-EUSO experiment;4.System Monitoring: Check of the data acquisition system for the Multi-Anode Photomultipliers installed on the NASA-funded superpressure balloon EUSO-SPB, during balloon flight operations in April 2017 and report of eventual malfunctioning;
System Integration: Partecipation to the assembly of the Mini-EUSO experiment.
